A Day in Farm Sanctuary, CONTINUED

We know it as the famous book by Gene Baur, but we also know it as the actual sanctuary for animals. After reading the book me and my CSE group (the Zooper MANO) got inspired to visit the important location. Our curiosity was sparked and we knew we had to go! Farm Sanctuary in Acton, California was truly a remarkable place. Aside from taking a fun road trip, our destination was better than expected. Once we arrived at the farm, the staff was kind and welcoming. Everyone who works there is happy and enthusiastic about loving animals. The atmosphere was relaxing and filled with good vibes. During our stay, we took the one hour tour through the farm. We got to visit all types of animals such as sheep, pigs, cows and chickens. It was lovely to bond and hear the animals’ unique stories. Such as how they got rescued and how they became very friendly towards humans. All of the animals have special characteristics, especially when it comes to their personalities, because they are quite similar to humans. Here at the sanctuary all animals are treated with respect and they have large spaces to live in also, it’s up to them if they want to interact with the visitors. In our experience, this was our first time bonding with farm animals and we really enjoyed it. Besides getting to know the sweet animals, we also heard great testimonies from the staff. We spoke with two young ladies who are currently vegan. Both are delighted with their decision and very passionate about animal rights. As one of the volunteers (Christine) said, “you get this nurturing feeling from seeing these animals happy and in their natural environment, enjoying their natural behaviors living out their lives the way that they were meant to.” We certainly agree, on what Christine said. The purpose of this facility is to make animals live their best lives.
Even if veganism is not for everyone, the members from Farm Sanctuary still respect that decision. It was great that they encouraged it, but they understand it is a long process. Overall, this experience was very eye-opening and we are more aware about the cruelties that occur in the factory farms. It is our duty to try and make a change. The terrible practices that are being used at these facilities should be abolished. However this may be too optimistic, but it all starts with raising awareness. In the end, if you ever do have a chance to visit this amazing sanctuary, go ahead because you will not regret it!

The March for Our Lives, continued

By Ariana Melchor
The March For Our Lives was a protest put together and led by students on March 24th at Waterfront Park in Downtown San Diego. We all stood in solidarity to demand gun reform. This movement began after 17 lives were lost on February 14th in Florida due to a 19 year old shooter.
“We’re so proud of you!”
“You’re our bright future!”
Those are just two out of the plenty of positive remarks I heard throughout the march from older citizens to the students who were marching. I had never felt more proud of myself for finally standing up for something I believed in. Although I have been on this earth for 18 years, not once in my life had I gone out to a big protest, especially not a dangerous one.

As I stood in the crowd listening to the students speak out, a Trump supporter divided the protesters so he could have a clear path to the very front. He carried two flags, one portraying his support of Trump and the other was the United States flag. I began to question my safety and if being there was truly the best place to be. After a few minutes, people began making their way up to cover the man’s flags with their pride flags, California flag, handmade signs, and stickers. As I witnessed young and old coming together for a positive change, I realized my fear was holding me back. I tightened my grip on my sign and pushed my way to the front to join those who were covering the Trump flag. When I got there, I felt like I was 20 feet tall, although I am only a 5’2” girl. I felt empowered.

The March For Our Lives was truly a life changing experience and it allowed me to see that when plenty of people come together, change can happen.
